The side and rear walls of this typical Victorian residence were removed to create an extension that generates a larger kitchen, dinning and entertaining space, offering a clear link from the house to the rear garden.
The additional space forms an L shape that wraps around the buildings back façade. Stained timber decking creates a monolithic quality to the form, and although site built sliding doors were originally specified, this feature had to be sacrificed due to reduction of the client’s budget. All structural elements were concealed in order to form a series of simple planes, offering a transitional space where the threshold of inside and out becomes blurred. Responding directly to the vertical lines evident within the existing house, found within the tall narrow windows and the bold vertical of the pertruding chimney breast, the decision was made to create a set of simple but strong vertically sliding windows. In response to the brick façade the choice was made to use horizontally laid timber cladding.
This project was completed in collaboration with Carl Turner Architects.
